Our Animals

Our PIgs

Known as, “The hairy pig”, “Kobe of the pork world”.

Mangalitza pigs are an Austro-Hungarian heritage breed of domesticated pig raised in our woods where they freely forage for acorns, nuts and have a natural lifestyle. Mangalitza pork is rich in Omaga 3, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and is a natural antioxidant, even good for your heart.  Mangalitza pork is healthier than white pork produced in intensive factory farming operations. University of Debrecen in Hungary found the levels of Omaga 3 in Mangalitza pork is 2 to 3 times higher than in many varieties of fish. It has a multitude of qualities:

High quality protein, large amounts of group B vitamins, large amounts of iron and Zinc, contains mono-unsaturated acids and oleic acid which helps control bad cholesterol and regulate good cholesterol. Lard is unsaturated as well.

These virtues of Mangalitza pigs are considered as a delicacy by some of the best chefs in the world. Very flavorful, high quality pork bread in an artisanal way in a natural lifestyle and surroundings.

Devin Knell, executive sous-chef at The French Laundry says, “Unlike workaday pork, Mangalitza is marbled and the fat dissolves on your tongue – it’s softer and creamier, akin to Wagyu beef.”

GOATS

Our goat breeds are Saanen, Nubian, La Mancha, Overhasli, French Alpine.

Why so many different breeds of goats? Each breed produces a different percentage of butterfat and quantity of milk, intern producing rich quality cheese. Our goats are happy goats raised grazing the pastures of Monte Verde Farm, eating grass, foliage, supplemented with grains and drinking fresh mountain well water.

SHEEP

Our lambs are Icelandic-Katahdin mix, pasture raised and drinking spring and well water from Blue Ridge Mountains.

CHICKENS

Chickens on Monte Verde Farm are pasture raised and drink fresh well water from the Blue Ridge Mountains. The way chickens are raised makes all the difference in the quality of the egg. No large confined controlled barns here!  Our chickens have fresh air, fresh water, fertile soil, roam for bugs and grass, fed limited amounts of corn and grain while being protected by our Great Pyrenees, Buck. Our chickens produce eggs with rich healthy orange colored yolks high in omega 3’s and vitamins.  According to, Mother Earth News Study, June 11, 2022 chickens pasture raised on healthy soil produce eggs with:

  • less cholesterol and saturated fats
